"The building of tension by using the reader’s imagination with locations that they can relate too is not always easy to do. But Pete has done something right when I'm not sure about walking into my junk store of a garage again.”

Discovery House

This is my first book. It was written between 1996 and 1998. When finished, a couple of my friends read the first few chapters and I think I was the only person who managed to get to the end, which makes sense as I was the one who wrote it. There was only one print out made of the book, which, in the intervening years, was mislaid. Also, the original and only word file had been lost, or more to the point, the computer it was saved on was thrown away (always back up your work, lesson learned). So, I forgot about the whole thing because I didn’t really think it was any good, plus, I had no idea what I was doing.

In 2011 I was searching for some scripts to put into a book for my brother as a Christmas present. We had worked on a project called ‘Fraud Engine’, and I knew it was saved on the oldest, dustiest computer I had in my box room. Thankfully it still booted up (Windows 98). While searching for the scripts I stumbled across a sub-folder, simply called ‘new folder’, buried deep within the Windows Explorer file structure. Amazingly, it contained one file, Discovery House. Unfortunately, the formatting from the version of Word it was on back in the day to 2010 had caused some corruption and a couple of paragraphs had been lost.

After reading some of it back I decided it was not suitable for public consumption in its raw state, but regardless of the how it was written and the style, it did teach me the discipline and aptitude to sit down and write a full length novel, something to this day I still find challenging around all the other things in my life. Even though for the next few years I started writing scripts and reviews, the desire to write another novel never left. Although I had decided to keep Discovery House away from the public, my friend, Claire, badgered from me a raw, warts and all copy. She loved it and word quickly spread leading to a demand for it to be made available. So, when I find time, I go back to it, make changes and tidy it up here and there.

With the new website coming online I thought it would be a great idea to post what I have done so far as extra content, and when I have finished editing it maybe, just maybe, I will do some hard copies and put it onto kindle. It may not be perfect or the best writing you’ve ever read or even the best story, but it does make me think about how far I have come, and for that reason it serves as my greatest motivation.
